The UFC announced today what most have known for several months, Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin will face each other at UFC 116 in July, in Las Vegas for the Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Championship. Tickets for the event go on sale to the public on May 13.
When Lesnar (4-1) enters the cage against Carwin it will be almost one year since he last competed inside the Octagon. Lesnar beat Frank Mir at UFC 100 last July in their much anticipated re-match. Lesnar won that fight via TKO after holding Mir on the canvas and pummeling him with repeated shots to the head.
Carwin (12-0) is coming off a completely dominant performance over Mir at UFC 111 in March to win the Interim UFC Heavyweight title. He has yet to be taken past the first round in any of his 12 professional fights, and only the fight with Mir lasted longer than three minutes.
This is the third time Lesnar and Carwin are set to face one another. They were first booked for UFC 106 in November and later at UFC 108 in January, but Lesnar was forced out of each fight due to a severe case of the intestinal disorder diverticulitis. Several times it was reported that Lesnar was so sick that his life was actually in danger.
Carwin has become quite the fan favorite and should have the majority of the crowd in attendance on his side against the highly unpopular and controversial Lesnar.
While Lesnar versus Carwin is the only bout that has been officially announced, other fighters expected to be on the card are Wanderlei Silva, Nate Marquardt, Cheick Kongo, and Roy Nelson.
