Jon Fitch has thrown out a solution to the mystery of who should be the number-one contender in the UFC welterweight division. When asked about who he thought his next opponent would be, Fitch answered, “You have an interesting match-up with Martin Kampmann and Jake Shields fighting on October 23rd. The next time a title shot is coming around is probably going to be a while, so I’m kinda thinking I might wanna fight again before the title shot. The winner of Kampmann-Shields would be a perfect match-up.”
With Dana White recently stating Shields could become the number-one contender after a victory over Kampmann, this is a smart play by Jon Fitch to stay in the mix at the top.

I think inevitably Jon Fitch is going to step up in weight, although he is arguably the second best 170lbs fighter in the world there is hesitation on part of the UFC to set up Fitch-GSP II after failing to deliver with what Dana White considers an “exciting” fight.
Personally, I thought that fight was very entertaining and would love to see the rematch but I feel that George would have to really clear out the division before they would set it up.
