April 14, 2011 – Ohio based mixed martial arts fight promotion Rocktagon MMA announced today that their highly touted “Amateur Elite” mixed martial arts series is returning to Elryia, Ohio. “Amateur Elite Series 5” is loaded with elite MMA talent and features one of the most highly anticipated lightweight title unification matches in amateur MMA history. Reigning lightweight champions Garret “The Sickness” Sahene and Marcus Washington will go head to head in the Rocktagon arena to determine who will reign as the organizations lightweight champion. “Amateur Elite Series 5” will take place on Saturday, April 23 at Midway Mall in Elyria, Ohio.
In December of 2010 news broke that popular East Coast fight promotion American Hardcore MMA merged with Las Vegas, Nevada based Rocktagon Entertainment. American Hardcore fighters now fight under the Rocktagon MMA banner. As a result of the merger, American Hardcore and Rocktagon MMA lightweight title holders must face off in the cage to determine who will retain their championship status.
According to Lorenzo Gentile, president of Rocktagon MMA, “We are very excited to be back in our hometown of Elyria as we gear up for another exciting night of non-stop MMA action. I can’t think of a better place to hold the first title unification fight in the history of our organization. This is going to be a hardcore battle between two dominant fighters. In the main event lightweight title unification match, American Hardcore MMA’s Garret “The Sickness” Sahene will face Rocktagon MMA’s Marcus Washington. Sahene and Washington have endured many hard fought wars in the cage, but both must put their titles on the line on April 23. Who will emerge as the Rocktagon MMA Amateur Lightweight Champion? World Class MMA’s top prospect, Garret “The Sickness” Sahene, is an American Hardcore MMA veteran and the organizations current lightweight champion. Sahene (7-2) is highly regarded as one of Ohio’s premiere mixed martial arts competitors. He recently claimed the American Hardcore MMA title in a hard fought decision win over Personal Training Tactics fighter Khama Worthy. Sahene is determined to prove that he is the organizations true amateur lightweight champion and plans to keep the belt where it belongs, in his possession.
Standing in his way is Samuel L. Felton Jr. Athletic Club fighter Marcus Washington (5-0-1), a hard charging, explosive knockout artist that has quickly become a Rocktagon MMA fan favorite. Washington, Rocktagon MMA’s current lightweight champion, has left many unconscious foes in his wake during his rise to the top of MMA’s amateur rankings. Washington plans to end this fight in the same fashion, by knocking out the savvy Sahene and retaining the title.
