Both of these fighters want another shot at Aldo
and both have put on impressive performances
since losing in their first fight to Aldo. While you
could argue that Edgar could be the next chal-
lenger, I believe Dana will wait until McGregor
fights in January to decide who will be taking
on Aldo next.
Depending on what happens in Boston between
McGregor and Siver, I could see this fight thrust-
ing the winner back into contention since Aldo
has wins over all but one person (McGregor) in
the top 5 and the only viable contenders now
would be a winner of the hypothetical Edgar vs.
Lamas fight or McGregor, assuming he gets past
Siver.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up seeing
Edgar vs. McGregor either, especially if Siver
drops out with an injury or if Aldo isn’t ready by
the time we know our next contender.
Edson Barboza defeated Bobby Green on Satur-
day night and expressed his desire for a top 5 or
top 10 opponent at lightweight.
Well, sorry Edson, most of them are booked, in-
jured or coming off a loss. Who we seemingly
do have is Michael Johnson, who you are cur-
rently tied with in the UFC rankings at 11 and
who is riding a three-fight win streak.
Call me old fashioned, but I also don’t think wins
over Evan Dunham and Bobby Green should
vault you into the top 5 of the lightweight divi-
sion, especially since you have guys like Eddie
Alvarez and Myles Jury outside of it. Now, if Bar-
boza were to put away Michael Johnson, then
you might look for someone elite to give him in
his next fight.
John Moraga is still expected to stay on the UFC
on Fox 13 card in Phoenix on December 13th
even though Jussier Formiga has dropped out of
their fight due to injury.
If Moraga wants a meaningful fight in his home-
town, both of these guys would present that
option and get Moraga back into the title mix in
the flyweight division.
If you’re Benavidez, you need some big state-
ment wins to even be looked at again for a title
shot at 135 pounds. You need to beat higher
ranked opponents than Dustin Ortiz and you’d
have a chance to do that with a fight against
Moraga.
Camus is still new to the division and could an-
nounce to everybody that he’s a legit contender
at bantamweight if he could beat Moraga on
short notice.
