In what many predicted as a
battle of two distinct martial
arts disciplines – striking ver-
sus grappling – Gracie stunned
them all with a resounding vic-
tory over James McSweeney at
ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY in
Manila via TKO. That was his
first stand up win and possibly
not the last from him.
Gracie made the transition to
MMA in 2006, clocking up a
professional record of 6-2 with
all wins (unsurprisingly) by sub-
mission. However following his
loss against Tim Kennedy in
Ultimate Fighting Champion-
ship (UFC), Gracie’s contract
was not renewed and he found
himself training without a goal
or a clear vision of what his fu-
ture in combat sports may hold.
Constantly debating within
himself, Gracie’s heart was in
MMA and he wanted to con-
tinue making a career out of
