From growing up in immense
poverty in Brazil to headlin-
ing fights in the biggest mixed
martial arts (MMA) promotion
in Asia, Bibiano Fernandes has
a story unlike anyone else on
his journey to becoming one of
the best bantamweight fight-
ers in the world.
Bibiano Fernandes was born on
30 March 1980 in Manaus, Bra-
zil and right from the get-go,
life was not easy for a young
Fernandes. His mother passed
away when he was just eight
years old and his father – who
had no viable means to support
his family – moved Bibiano and
his siblings into the Amazon
forest where they hunted and
fished to survive. These early
hardships and struggles have
no doubt helped to shape Fer-
nandes into the successful man
and fighter that he is today.
After spending a couple of
years in the forest, Fernandes
returned to the city of Manuas
without a home, job or food.
It was around this time that he
discovered the sport of Brazil-
ian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ), and little did
he know that it would change
his life forever.
He first heard of the sport when
he was washing car windows
as an odd job and met some
people who trained in BJJ. They
invited the young Fernandes to
watch their training – which he
did – but he could not afford
to join, until a kind lady at the
