New York is the only state in
which professional mixed mar-
tial arts is still banned, despite
the efforts of the many that
continue to lobby for its legal-
ization. Although pro MMA
events in New York remain il-
legal, Amateur MMA events
are not. In early 2013, the NY
Attorney General conceded
that Amateur MMA was not
banned under the current law,
a small victory for those rally-
ing for legalization in the state.
Many amateur MMA events
have been held since the an-
nouncement, but none at the
level of one NY based promo-
tion, Victory Combat Sports.
The popular fight promotion,
founded by Kevin Lillis, has al-
ready made history (not once,
not twice, but three times) since
amateur MMA was deemed ‘le-
gal’ in New York. In May 2013,
Victory Combat Sports was the
first to officially host a sanc-
tioned amateur MMA event in
New York. The event was regu-
lated by the World Kickboxing
Association (WKA). In 2014,
Victory took it a step further
by hosting the first MMA event
ever to be held at Madison
Square Garden (MSG).
