There’s Only One Fight For
Chael Sonnen That Makes Sense

When Chael Sonnen an-
nounced that he was dipping
his toe into the USADA test-
ing pool — a feeling out pro-
cess for a possible comeback
in the UFC — it was a head
scratcher. Hey, wasn’t this the
guy who said he would never
come back? That retirement
was a done deal for him, that
he wouldn’t waffle?
Well break out the Eggos. It
has been several weeks since
Sonnen let slip that he was
considering a return to action,
and the more and more you
think on it, the more only one
fight really makes sense: An-
derson Silva.
Sonnen was Conor McGregor
before McGregor was a known
name in the MMA world, the
brash, WWE-style trash talk-
ing promotional machine that
Dana White no doubt salivates
over. With raucous media ap-
pearances and a fake “cham-
pionship” belt, Sonnen pushed
the greatest middleweight of
all time to the limit not once,
but twice. Sure, there was an
asterisk on that first fight at
UFC 117 back in 2010 after
Sonnen failed a drug test and
was suspended a full year —
but lets face it, there was an
asterisk on his entire career
when he tested positive for
multiple banned substances
in the lead up to his fight with
Wanderlei Silva (and later Vi-
tor Belfort, after Silva dodged
a drug test) at UFC 175.
For his crimes surrounding
UFC 175, Sonnen was handed
a sentence of two years, and
with his time served, it looks
like retirement might not be
