Make no mistake, UFC 205 was a pow-
er struggle. Not the event itself, as that
hasn’t happened yet. Simply, the book-
ing of it.
It was a war with several fronts, but only
one mattered. Sure, there may have
been a bit of showmanship by the UFC
in offering Khabib Nurmagomedov two
contracts to face Eddie Alvarez for the
lightweight title (at UFC 205 in New York
or 206 in Toronto). That’s likely linked to
Alvarez stalling for more money (can you
blame him?), or the fact that Joe Rogan
almost spilled the beans on the headlin-
ing fight a week earlier. Either way, they
used Nurmagomedov as a pawn. At best,
this little impasse was a skirmish, and it
didn’t last long.
The real power struggle was between the
UFC and superstar featherweight champ
Conor McGregor. It played out prior to
the announcement that he would head-
line UFC 205 in the promotion’s twenty-
years in the making return to New York
City in November. And McGregor won.
