them even have that coveted
“underground” title, if that’s
something that turns your
crank. Don’t feel bad about
supporting a small band from
across the country, or across
the pond for that matter. If you
find something you love, throw
yourself behind it: buy the
shirts and the music, tell your
friends about them until they
listen to them just so you will
shut up, hell if possible get to
know the guys. It’s up to you
how far you go, really. There
is nothing worse than putting
time and energy into promot-
ing and supporting something
that you don’t really enjoy;
kind of like going to a job you
hate and not getting paid.
The other night I was un-
winding after a long day and
ended up plastered. You know
how that goes right? Anyway,
there I was with a good buzz
and craving some good hard
rock but nothing I could think
of sounded good. I browsed
through the local scene and
there’s some okay stuff but
if I wanted to hear another
song about boobs and beer I
wouldn’t have been actively
seeking out music when I had
more important things to do,
like find the bottle opener and
order pizza. Finally I landed
on these guys from Alabama
called Shallow Side. They had
a cool sound and were actu-
ally talking about something
interesting. It’s not something I
always dig but every now and
then a good groove and a posi-
tive message are just what the
doctor ordered. If I were to pick
an independent rock band to
really push it would be these
guys before anyone our local
scene has spawned.
The bottom line is you’re
not getting any younger, the
world isn’t getting any safer,
and unless you’re Duncan
McLeod you’re not going to
live forever; most of us give so
much of our time and energy
to things that we don’t want
to do because that’s life but
there’s no reason to waste time
listening to shitty music.
