In a sport filled with angry,
testosterone filled beasts,
we find “Smile’N” Sam
Alvey. This happy-go-lucky
fighter is making a huge
splash in the UFC’s middle-
weight division. So, let’s
look at his MMA career
thus far and try to under-
stand what makes Sam Al-
vey Smile.
Born in 1986, in Water-
ford, Wis., Alvey wrestled
and played football in high
school. Alvey also was
a trumpet player in the
school’s marching band.
After high school, Alvey
attended Lakeland Col-
lege where he was a semi-
professional trumpet play-
er. Alvey’s combat sports
started with Pankration
and eventually shifted to
MMA, with his first ama-
teur bout in 2007. His first
fight did not go as planned
and Alvey was TKO’d in
the second round. Alvey
did win his next two ama-
teur bouts and turned pro
in 2008.
After running an 11-1 re-
cord with all the fights be-
ing in his home state with
several of the fights in The
King Of The Cage Promo-
tion, Alvey got a bump up
in competition and would
face Bellator veteran Jason
