Guida, after a win over
Guida, Alvey was signed by
Bellator where he would
drop to middleweight.
Where he would go 1-1
with the promotion. Al-
vey was then selected to
take part on the Ultimate
Fighter Carwin vs. Nelson
where we would be Shane
Carwin’s first pick, but
would lose his first fight
and that would be the last
we would see of Alvey for
a while. Alvey would have
to regroup and fight in a
few smaller promotions
before working his way
back to the UFC.
After winning four of his
next five fights, Alvey was
called by the MFC to com-
pete for the middleweight
title against then cham-
pion Elvis Mutapcic. Alvey
fought a good fight but it
was not enough to take
the belt, he lost via unani-
mous decision. Next on
the plate for Alvey would
be UFC & Bellator vet Jay
Silva. Alvey would take
home the win with a third
round TKO. Once again,
Alvey found himself fight-
ing for the MFC middle-
weight title against the
new champ Jason South
which Alvey took home
the nod this time and the
belt. Alvey would defend
his title one time before
getting the call from the
UFC for another shot.
In June of 2014, Alvey
would get his first fight in
the UFC against Tom Wat-
son at UFC Fight Night
47, where he would lose
once again by unanimous
decision. Next for Alvey
would be Dylan Andrews
at UFC Fight Night 55 in
November of 14′. This
time Alvey came out and
showed his true potential
by knocking out Andrews
in the first round. Keeping
up the momentum Alvey
would knock out his next
opponent Cezar Ferreira at
Fight Night 61 also in the
first round. Most recent-
ly Alvey faced Dan Kelly
at Fight Night 65 in May
where we would see Alvey
once again KO his oppo-
nent in the first round in
a showing of true power
and accuracy.
After the fight, Sam was
asked who he would like
to face next. Alvey said, “I
do not want to call out any
of my enemies or people I
don’t like. I do not want
to help my enemies make
money, I want to help the
people I like make mon-
ey”. He then called out
MMA fighter/model Elias
Theodorou putting a bet
on the table that would
have the loser shaving their
head. Since Theodorou is a
model and his hair is a big
part of that, this could out
to be a fun and interest-
ing fight if he decides to
indulge Alvey.
Only time will tell if Alvey
can keep up the momen-
tum and work his way up
the ranks in the already
talent rich middleweight
division. The one thing
you can never take away
from Alvey is his infectious
smile, that I am sure drives
his opponents crazy, but
we will see if he can keep
“Smile’N” or if his next foe
will knock it off of his face.
Having Alvey in the MMA
game is great for the sport
since there are so few and
far between fighters that
are just happy to be there.
Alvey is in the same league
as John Dodson and Paige
VanZant when it comes to
showing that they are tru-
ly appreciative for the op-
portunity they have been
given and happy for every
second they spend in the
cage. Keep an eye on Al-
vey as he progresses closer
and closer to a middle-
weight title shot.
